CRI (Color Rendering Index) has been the default metric used by the lighting industry to predict color quality outcomes for nearly 50 years.
Despite known shortcomings, it has remained relatively unchanged throughout most of its existence.
Today, concerns that this outdated metric can no longer reliably predict results that match our visual assessment has brought renewed interest in seeking a better way to evaluate light source color rendition.
In this course we’ll explore TM-30, the method for evaluating light source color rendition developed by the IES, as an improved alternative to CRI.

Michael Husiak

Michael Husiak has worked in the lighting industry for 13 years and has watched lighting technology evolve as LEDs quickly became the prominent light source in modern luminaires. Michael’s time in lighting has been spent working in various roles at Cree Lighting and has afforded him knowledge in Manufacturing, Product Development, Engineering, and Sales. He has been an active IES member over the past decade and has been a regular instructor in the IES Toronto Section’s Fundamental of Lighting course. Michael recently relocated from Toronto to Calgary and maintains an active position in the IES Calgary Section as Emerging Professional Committee Chair.
Jess McNabb
ETC Specialist, Controls Group / Optics Lighting & Controls Ltd.
Jess McNabb is a theatrical lighting programmer, technician and designer based in Calgary. Currently the DMX and Production Lighting Specialist at Optics Lighting and Controls, she was previously the Head of Lighting at Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon, Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse, and Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto. As she transitioned from working with conventional fixtures with coloured gels to colour-mixing LEDs, she found a particular interest in colour theory and rendition. She especially enjoys designing for contemporary and urban dance productions, where bolder choices in angle, colour, and timing are encouraged.
