Lighting technology and design practice are becoming increasingly complicated. As new methods and capabilities proliferate it can become overwhelming and frustrating to accurately conceive of lighting design outcomes. Join the speakers as they provide a refresher on the foundational lighting understandings and introduce new and improved information to help you better realise your design visions. This presentation will cover essential concepts and address fundamental questions such as illumination levels, LED produced lighting distribution, colour rendering metrics and much more.

 

Speakers

Geoff Bouckley, BFA, Assoc. IALD, LC. Geoff is an Associate and Architectural Lighting Consultant at SMP Engineering with over 20 years of professional lighting design experience. This includes an extensive fine arts background in theatrical lighting design and management for theatre, dance, and concert productions. His affinity for performance lighting design continues as the Lighting Director for the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show which incorporates moving lights, specialized LED luminaires, and detailed integration of DMX control sequences with timecoded video and special effects to produce Canada’s largest outdoor variety showcase. The combination of live performance and architectural lighting experience sets Geoff apart in the industry allowing him to contribute innovative concepts and solutions across a broad range of building types and sites. Notable recent projects include the Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton and Calgary’s Centennial Planetarium transformation into a contemporary art gallery. Geoff is Lighting Certified by the National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Professionals (NCQLP), an Associate member of the International Association of Lighting Designers, and an active member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) where he currently serves as the Past President for the Calgary Section. A founding member of SMP Engineering’s lighting group, Geoff has been with the firm since 2013.

Sunil Nakai, P.Eng., MBA, B.Sc, LEEDAP BD+C, LC, PMP. Sunil is an Associate and Senior Project Engineer at SMP Engineering, with 15 years of professional engineering experience in the industry. His experience ranges from educational, institutional, and office buildings, to recreational and entertainment buildings, as well as having substantial experience with various renovation projects. Lighting Certified through the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP), Sunil has a deep understanding of not only lighting principles, but how to apply these successfully to each project in a manner that makes even the simplest of designs and installations pop! Some of the more interesting projects he has been involved with include the accent lighting of the Muttart Conservatory pyramids (City of Edmonton) and the High Level Bridge (City of Edmonton). With a passion for illumination, beyond project design his experience includes being a both his ongoing role as an executive member of the Edmonton chapter of the IES and his previous work as an academic tutor for a graduate-level architectural lighting course. A member of SMP Engineering’s lighting group, Sunil has been with the firm since 2013.
